Travellers Rest and the Battle of Nashville

After taking the kids to the mall to spend their Christmas money, I rewarded myself with a stop on the way home. Travellers Rest was a large plantation house in Nashville. The owners were supporters of the Confederate cause and the wife boasted that the proudest moment of her life was when she had 7 Confederate generals eating at her table.

Finally a Battlefield - Parker's Crossroads

I was able to go by the Parker's Crossroads Battlefield when we had to go toward Memphis last week. Nathan Bedford Forrest fought off two Yankee brigades trying to destroy his one brigade. He was qouted as saying "Charge 'em both ways."

Tombstone, AZ

Here is one of those times I left the South and am posting pics from somewhere else that I hope you'll enjoy. They are from Tombstone, AZ...you know Wyatt Earp and the gunfight at the OK Corral.

Moss Wright Park

I took these pics from my iphone last week when we went over to Moss Wright Park here in Goodlettsville. Two are of the Bowen House which is the oldest brick structure in middle Tennessee being completed in 1787.

Rock Slide Find

Rock slides really put a damper in my travels this past weekend...one going and one coming. The one coming back allowed me to find this sign in Tennessee.

Saturday in Nashville

Travis, Mnady, and Mandy's sister Elizabeth visited us this past weekend. We just decided to stay close and go see some things in Nashville. We went down to Centennial Park and saw the Parthenon after eating some really good BBQ.

Trip to Pigeon Forge

We took a trip this past weekend over to Pigeon Forge with a stop by my Dad's in North Georgia. The markers on the Cherokee Victory and Defeat were photographed not too far north of the Georgia line in North Carolina. The other two were taken in Pigeon Forge, TN.

Murfreesboro

I took the kids on a "field trip" / "Staff Ride" the other day to Stones River National Battlefield Park. It would've been named Murfreesboro National Battlefield Park if the South had stopped the Northern invasion. The kids did the "Junior Ranger" program and learned a lot about the battle, Civil War life of soldiers and how a cannon was fired.

Rock Castle

When Allison made me go to a fall bazaar this morning, I found this marker nearby. This house still stands in Hendersonville, TN.

Fall Encampment at Manskers Station, TN

The red River Militia officially formed this weekend with the 4 of us pictured above. I was also able to speak with the "Bible Man" about religion on the colonial frontier. He's the only guy who reproduces 18th century bibles the way they did back then. His bibles can be found being used in places such as Williamsburg and Jamestown.

Mansker's Station

This is a blockhouse at the reconstruction of Mansker's Station. Mansker's Station was a colonial frontier fort back when Tennessee was still part of North Carolina. Mansker's Station and the Bowen Plantation are located here in Goodlettsville. The Bowen House (1787) is one of the oldest brick structures in this part of Tennessee. I was there for my volunteer orientation today so expect some future pics of me looking like I'm in an earlier century.

We decided to take a day trip and drove up to Bowling Green, KY.

Franklin, TN

On my never ending quest to visit every battlefield (at least once) that I can, I took this picture on a Civil War stop. I'll try and keep my finger out of the way in the future.

Kershaw-Cornwallis House

This is my first post in what will hopefully be a long and interesting journey through Southern history. I took this Camden, SC in July of this year.
